Q & A. All about the music!

Little Stuff
Why am I here as a musician?
I was promoting my music on Soundclick for many years. I had so far 9 years of fun and some drama there as a local and regional musician and artist from the San Francisco Bay Area promoting myself on many websites, such as my autobiography and participating in Soundclick contests but coming up short.

I figured the Net was where most up-and-coming Rock bands at, along with many other major label Rock bands and musicians were promoting themselves also. I had a PureVolume music page before, but haven't got serious with it until now. There's a lot of homegrown talent of independent musicians and unsigned bands promoting their music and making a fan base here. And I want to be those musicians and artists doing so!

Do I play live shows as a musician?
Used to, when I was playing guitar and pursuing this with my former garage bands I was a member of. Nowadays I mostly make music at home, and promote it online. I would love to play live shows again. But I might really need a backup band of live musicians to present Patrick Lew's Band center stage. And I need less parental control with family when living in my house with my parents in my hometown of Antioch. And when the right opportunity, respect and time comes for my music. I mean! I been making music since 1999, promoting myself online when I was 15 years old. So timing is a bit essential for myself to get recognized musically.

How many years have you been doing music?
About almost a decade. I started learning guitar when I was 13 at a Chinese music school, and began writing my own songs quickly through the power chords I learned during guitar lessons. I began recording basement-made Rock N' Roll since 2001, when I got a 4-track Portastudio from some Guitar Center. I began using computers to record my compositions and ideas around 2005 or 2006, when I invested in a lot of up-to-date musical and recording equipment with my college money for cram school.

What would you classify the style of your music and unsigned band?
It's hard to say. I've been influenced by a lot of music and experiences. I hold a close nostalgia to 80's hard rock and metal. And I love early 90's alternative rock. I have also been influenced by punk and thrash music a lot from the Bay Area. I also was a die-hard Beatles fanatic growing up, collecting any merchandise related to The Beatles as a kid.

But my music in Patrick Lew's Band? I'd say it is unconventional Hard Rock that is guitar-based with some added electronic sounds! I've been told my music as P Lew's Band to be classified when promoting it online as: Garage Punk, Grunge.

What do you like about Patrick Lew's Band?
Everything. The life experiences. Making music. It's a special event and interest of mines. I been promoting my music online for 11 years already, and I would never let anyone discourage me from doing what I love. Which is what I got from some music critics on Soundclick's website of critics and reviewers. I also like being solo, because I don't work under time pressure when coming up with ideas for new songs and Rock N' Roll music, and I don't have to put up with other musicians in Bandalism type events. Such as drama in playing guitar and making music in a band.

Patrick Lew Band EPK

"The unique J-grunge sound of Patrick Lew, channeling The Beatles, Nirvana, Green Day, Poison and even Elvis, head bangs social, political and philisophical barriers with his muse (the Caucasian Faith) making him the most exciting Asian American rock guitar hero ever to break out of the garage!"

Introduction written by Kelvin Han Yee

25 year old Patrick Lew is a Punk/Hard Rock/Rock & Roll underground internet musician who's music and style is unique and 100% his own. He is an Asian-American born male brought up in the Bay Area of Northern California. And while is musical talent is different from anything anyone has ever heard, it is interestingly unconventional yet gifted. He has been a songwriter and guitarist since his early teens and has developed his own empowering sense of electrifying and dynamic style. While it is true he has played rhythm guitar and bass in several bands with old friends and acquaintances, Patrick has that found his muse is better suited for solo career opportunity rather than bandmate material. A few interesting yet not surprising musical influences of his are The Beatles, Silverchair, Guns N' Roses, Nirvana, Green Day, Poison, Pearl Jam, White Lion, and even artists such as Elvis and Bryan Adams. His most self-influential genre of music is Rock, Punk, Hard Rock and of course Rock & Roll. However, his musical talent can be linked to quite a few different eras and different cultural regions of music and art, including Japanese Pop. Patrick is currently studying to receive his B.A. in Philosophy at CSU East Bay and has future aspirations to receive another B.A. in Music while perhaps at a different university in California. Patrick does have an interesting marriage and personal relationship with his wife, Faith Lew. They have been together currently for 5 years. She does sometimes help him collaborate on some of his music.

The PLB Dirt Sheet

PLB is a garage punk band from Antioch, California, formed in 2001. PLB is the one man band and music of Taiwanese American punk guitarist and songwriter Patrick Lew. In PLB, Lew plays all instruments and self-produces and self-promotes his music and solo project all over the Internet on various websites and regionally in the San Francisco Bay Area. Musically in PLB, Lew fuses various forms of classic rock, hardcore punk, garage rock and slightly amateurish production and dirty choppy guitar sounds and disconnected rhythms and technical musicality. Some of Lew’s music in PLB are acid or progressive punk instrumentals while the hot topics in his songwriting are social discontent, self-introspection and motivation and the struggles of ethnic, cultural and social experiences.

While Patrick Lew’s Band has received mixed-to-lukewarm reviews along with being an unsigned underground rock band putting the music out there independently, via Internet and locally. Patrick Lew’s music remains a cult-like critical success in the indie rock/punk music scene. Regardless of musical skills and expertise! Along with different social and ethnic barriers and profiles.

Lew himself has been musically active since the age of 13 (circa 1999) as a freelance Rock guitarist, musician and artist. Methodically and consistently throughout time to improve his guitar playing, songwriting and music producing skills alone or with former band mates. As of 2011, Lew is an intermediate-level guitar player who plays hard rock, blues and punk styles on his Fender. It's been also three years since Lew last played in a full-time local Bay Area rock band. But has been persistent since then as a solo musician despite haters, personal struggles and etc etc.

The band has so far released two home-made studio albums: Curb Your Wild Life (2009) and Let It Rise And Against (2010) under "Patrick Lew's Band." And is preparing for the release and publishing of Lew's third album "Murder Bay" alongside a 10th anniversary celebration of Patrick Lew's music as an online social-network listening party in late Summer of 2011.

Do you play live?

No. I make music as a hobby in bedroom with my guitars and Macbook! Except when I'm playing in a band, yeah. I pursue my music and ambitions more seriously locally in the Bay. But I mainly make Rock music and put it up online.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I don't know. Because for one, I hate the music business. Maybe. If I got real benefits and opportunities from it. If it helps me get somewhere in life and be successful on my own terms, I would definitely do it. But it depends how well I am valued for what I am worth as an artist and human being.

Whether I get a record deal or not, one thing is for sure. I am all about the music. Not fame and fortune. While money and fame is nice to have, I don't usually see it that way always. I am all about playing gigs and being passionate about playing guitar and liberating those who actually give a hoot about PLB. And also! Technicality, orthodox standards and perfection in music is 100% pretentious.
